Weather and climate of Finland

Factors that affect to the climate of Finland and Europe

There are many factors affecting to the climate of Finland and Europe.

1. The most important factor is the northern location of Finland. The radiation of the sun is directed obliquely to the surface of earth, when there is much less warmth coming to earth than for example in the equator, where the radiation is coming directly to earth´s surface. This cools our climate down remarkably.

2. The Atlantic ocean and especially the warming Golf-stream have a strong effect on the climate of Finland. It carries the tropical warmth to northern Atlantic, all the way to the "huippuvuoret". The countries that are on the same latitude than Finland, but do not have the warm effect of seastream are tundra (Siperia, Canada) or they have Ice Age (Greenland). Also the big continent of Asia has it´s effect on the climate of Finland and Europe: the indian summers and freezing colds are from Eurasia!

3. Luckily the direction of the winds in Europe is from the southwest. When the winds blow over the Atlantic ocean, which is heated up by the Golf-stream, the warmth of the water transferes to the winds. This effects all the way to Finland, too. Finland has about 6 degrees warmer climate than one could estimate by it´s latitude. This is a consequence of Golf-stream and western winds.
