Predators in Finland

Attitude towards predators

Attitude towards predators has been respectful but mingled with fear through the ages. During the times when people started to call these animals predators, people felt that they were competitors to them. For example in the 18th centurys non-fiction predators were described as greedy, terrible and strong animals. Predators were also thought to be part of the system of the world controlled by god. In other words predators were thought to be elements of the natural forces. Respected Finnish men of the people - Topelius and Lönnrot - have described predators to be evil, but respected animals in their folkstories. That is one reason to the hatred for predators. After 1950th century predators have been claimed to be more human. It is said that they can intrigue against human and even that they are able to evade bullets.
