Arrival of birds in Finland

The first birds are believed to have arrived in Finland about 10.000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. The first birds belonged to the Arctic species such as Uria (guillemot), Laridae (gull, kajava), Fratercula arctica (puffin, lunni) and Plectrophenax nivalis (snow bunting, pulmunen). A little later as coniferous forests established themselves other species such as Luscinia suecica (bluethroat, sinirinta), Carduelis flammea (mealy redpoll, urpiainen), Calcarius lapponicus (Lapland bunting, lapinsirkkku) etc. arrived in Finland.

The Finnish bird species have arrived from different directions- from the Arctic region (e.g Sterna paradisae(arctic tern, lapintiira), Aythya marila ( scaut, lapasotka), Phalaropus lodatus (red-necked phalarope, vesipääsky) and Calidris temminckii (Temminck´s bird, lapinsirri) from Siberia (e.g Tetraestas bonasia (hazelhen, pyy), Picoides tridactylus (threetoed woodbecker, pohjantikka), Perisoreus infaustus (Siberian jay, kuukkeli), Parus cinctus (Temminck´s stint, lapintiainen), Bombycilla garrulus (waxwing, tilhi), Pinicola enucleator (pine grosbeak , taviokuurna) and Emberiza rustica (rustic bunting, pohjansirkku) and from Europe Pernis apivorus (honey buzzard , mehiläishaukka), Columba palumbus (wood pigeon, sepelkyyhky), Parus caeruleus ( blue tit, sinitiainen), Erithacus rubecula (robin, punarinta), However, bird species in Finland are changing all the time .
