"My Secret University". FEBS Letters, 2003, Volume 540, Issues 1-3, Pages 1-2.
The Universities of today are not what they should be. This short paper by Gottfried Schatz, in his excellent series entitled "Jeff's View", should be read by everybody (from students to politicians) involved in today's, and yesterday's, University life. "My Secret University" reminds us of what we should expect from our Universities, what we should not expect from them, and what they should, and should not, set as primary goals for their activities.
A real gem ! Keep them coming "Jeff".
Questions for scientists
1) Is there really a "Mafia" of research funding? If so, how can it be (humanely) eradicated?
2) How easy is it to "get started" in scientific research without being associated with a "Big Name"?
3) Is "fundamental" research really useful, or should we always design our projects around a pre-defined "application"?
4) Since we all know that Journal Impact Factors do not reflect the quality of individual research articles, why are they still used to measure scientific "productivity" and/or the "likelihood of success" of a project, when evaluating applications for research funding or positions? What other options are there?
5) Do YOU have any questions?
