The Department of Biology was founded August 1st, 1995, when the former Departments of Zoology and Botany (founded in 1959) and Genetics (founded in 1970) were united as part of the reorganization process of the Faculty of Science at the University of Oulu.

The Department of Biology is located at the Linnanmaa Campus together with the supporting units, the Museum of Zoology, the Experimental Zoo, the Botanical Gardens and Museum, and the Biological Library.

The two biological field stations, the Perämeri Research Station located on the Island of Hailuoto and the Oulanka Biological Station in Kuusamo, also form an essential part of the research and teaching in the field of biology at the University of Oulu.
