HISTORY OF THE NMR LABORATORY

1962: The first NMR spectrometer, Varian A-60, in Finland was installed in Oulu. The last measurements on this system were performed in spring 1975.
1964: The first M.Sc.Thesis dealing with NMR spectroscopy (E. Rahkamaa: About chemical shift in NMR spectroscopy)
1970: Varian T-60 was installed.
1971: The first Ph.D.Thesis on NMR (E. Rahkamaa: Investigations of the high resolution proton magnetic resonance spectra of pyrrole)
1976: JEOL FX-100 FT NMR was installed in summer 1976 and operated until 1991.
1986: JEOL GX-400 was taken into use.
1988: Bruker AM200 was bought from Huhtamäki Oy.
1994: Bruker AM200, DSX300WB, DPX400 and DRX500 were installed during the spring in a new laboratory which was officially inaugurated by Professor Richard R. Ernst (middle in the picture) and Rector Lauri Lajunen (left), assisted by Professor Erkki Rahkamaa (right).
1994: June 5th – 10th: 12th EENC was held in Oulu. There were over 500 participants from 30 countries.
1997: Seminar “35 years of NMR spectroscopy at the University of Oulu”
1999: AM200 was upgraded to DPX200.
2002: Micro imaging unit was purchased for the DSX300WB.
2011/2012: Installation of three new spectrometers: 300WB, 400, and 600 MHz. The purchase was funded from the EU Regional Development Funds as well as by the University of Oulu and some local companies.

Today: Shared NMR laboratory of Departments of Chemistry and Physics consisting of the 6 Bruker spectrometers installed in 1994, 1999 and 2011/2012 (200, 2x300, 400, 500 and 600 MHz). Solid state (MAS, VAS and wideline) and micro-imaging accessory on both DSX300WBs. Ca. 70-80 users.
