The NMR laboratory is shared by the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. Because of this, the research is extremely versatile covering, for example, identification of polymers as well as inorganic molecules, structure determination of biomolecules, development of novel experimental methods, and  research of complex materials such as liquid crystals and porous glasses. We also provide instrument time for local companies.

The laboratory consists of six spectrometers at five different magnetic field strengths (4.7 - 14.1 Tesla) and accessories suitable for measuring liquid, gaseous as well as solid state samples. Two of the instruments are also equipped with a micro-imaging unit utilized mainly on materials sciences.

Physically the laboratory is located at the first floor of the University main campus (Linnanmaa) at the premises of the Department of Chemistry.

Topical issues:

Installation of three new spectrometers (300, 400 and 600 MHz) started in autumn 2011 and the final parts were installed in spring 2012. After the installation there are now six spectrometers in operation (200, 2x300, 400, 500 and 600 MHz). This InNo NMR project was funded by the Regional Coucil of Oulu from the EU regional development funds, the University of Oulu and a few local companies.
