Women's Studies at the University of Oulu

The Women's Studies unit, situated at The Faculty of Education, serves all the faculties through its inter- and multidisciplinary nature and outreach in the Department of Educational Sciences and Teacher Education.

The profile of Women's Studies at the University of Oulu reflects the general mission statement of the University of Oulu and its particular areas of focus: education and pedagogy, equality, Nordicity and Indigeneity, multiculturalism in the North, globalisation, information technology and cyberculture (including cyberecofeminism). The Women's Studies unit offers courses in areas the are not taught or well-represented in other Finnish universities: Ecofeminism, comparative Indigenous women's issues (Sami and Native Canadian women), women with disabilities and Northern women writers.

Although most of the courses cover readings in languages other than Finnish (Swedish, English, some French and German), Women's Studies courses themselves are taught in Finnish. However, it is possible for international students to take courses in the context of Northern Women's Studies, taught periodically (see the NWS program). Furthermore, it is possible for international students to get credits in Women's Studies by negotiating the terms and equivalences with Senior lecturer Vappu Sunnari and by taking examinations and filling other requirements in English. In addition, the unit hosts web courses on gendered and sexualised violence. All the course material is in English and the course will also be mentored in English.

Courses are also offered through Hilma, see http://www.hilmaverkosto.fi/english
