Development of population in recent history

By the end of year 1997 there were 5,15 million inhabitants living in Finland. Population have increased steadily during the post war period excluding the turn of 1970´s when emigration caused a decrease in population. The growth of population in Finland has mainly based on high birth rate and increased expectation of life. Today population growth is rather stable but somewhat slower than before.
