Emigration

In geography, migration is divided into to categories, international migration and national migration. The causes of emigration from Finland have often been work-related. First large emigration from Finland occurred in the turn of 20th century. At that time hundreds of thousands of Finns moved to North America, especially to the United States, in a search of an employment. The amount of emigrants during 1835-1930 was 380 000 from which 230 000 inhabitants are estimated to have stayed in North America for good.

Next big emigration took place in the turn of 70´s due to appearance of large post war generations to labour market causing a lack of employment. 142 000 Finns moved to Sweden in the 70´s but in the 80´s remigration was larger than emigration.
