[Stora Enso paper mill]

Next in the course program, we had a tour of the Stora Enso paper mill in Oulu. We walked through one of the paper machines, visited the quality control laboratories, and listened to a presentation on the mill's handling of environmental issues.

The third and last destination for the day was the recently (2003) completed fishway at Merikoski.

Oulujoki was an important reproduction ecosystem for different species of fish until the hydroelectric power plant blocking the river was constructed (completed 1948; pictured on the right). The fishway was built so that the fish could migrate up the river once again.

This is the downstream part of the fishway, passing the power plant.

On the way to the upstream part of the fishway. The middle part is in a direction opposite to the land route leading to the upper part, so it is not pictured here.

The upstream part of the fishway, built on the watercourse of Hupisaari, a city park.

There was also a room with a window into a part of the fishway. We managed to see a trout, but it was too fast for the camera in these lighting conditions.

The relatively eventful course day ended here.
