Workshop! After the theory section, it was time for an exercise in problem-based learning. Task: collect biological samples from the lake, and analyze which species can be found. First, we set up a workshop in the greenhouse, much like the pupils of the school. |
Then, to collect the samples, we needed boats. We could use some that were parked at the shore near the greenhouse. The weather had apparently been prepared for us by Mr. Murphy — since we were going outside, it had to be a rainy day. |
The boats needed to be emptied of water before use. It had been raining also on Monday. |
This is the greenhouse, viewed from the shore. The rest of the group is walking out to prepare for sample collection. |
There was wharf for the boats a bit further along the shore. |
At the location of the previous picture, less than half a meter from the lake, geothermal heat could be seen rising through the ground. The water was boiling [video: 5 sec, 500 kB]. |
Once the samples had been collected, next up was analysis. Microscopes were very useful for this. |
What's under the microscope? Looks like a... Canthocamptus staphylinus, says the reference book. For a full reference of observed species, see the appendix. |
